In our expanding connected world, access to hardware information for systems, such as those in industrial or automotive applications, can be especially useful. Interfacing with equipment locally or remotely, wirelessly updating software and systems anytime and anywhere, and monitoring status to avoid downtime can provide notable cost benefits.
IoT Device Monitoring
IoT device monitoring enables big and small businesses to monitor several different devices and the data collected through these devices. Managers are able to see the data collected and ensure the devices are functioning over long distances (Figure 1). Device management is now critical to a number of applications. It’s a solution for monitoring activity, giving commands, and managing updates, patches, troubleshooting, and security.
IoT Device Monitoring
Connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices around the world will transmit over 430 trillion bytes of data communication across different applications in smart cities, medical operations, and industrial environments. DIGI offers sensor-based solutions and a sophisticated platform for remotely monitoring device deployments of any size, anywhere as well as professional design, implementation, and certification teams.
DIGI ConnectCore 8X SBC Pro Development Kit (Figure 2) delivers a powerful and secure Single Board Computer (SBC) platform with complete support for Linux and Android. This kit is designed to reduce time-to-market by virtually eliminating the traditional risk, effort, and complexity of custom board design without sacrificing flexibility or capabilities. The compact form factor integrates an on-board dual-band antenna option, USB connectivity, and a DIGI XBee® RF connector.
A color touchscreen interface enables a user to easily enter data in several different applications such as automotive, industrial, and commercial use. The easy-to-use software DIGI Remote Manager® can guide engineers in creating easy-to-navigate icons to select different monitoring screens (Figure 3). You can also extend your IoT management network with custom code and leverage the power of edge computing by loading and managing different Python scripts.
Conclusion
Understanding the data in your business is now more important than ever, especially with data coming from different locations. All the data needs to be easily accessible and clearly displayed in one place is a must for efficiency and for workers and managers to understand what is going on. New technologies from DIGI, such as the ConnectCore 8X Pro Development Kit and Remote Manager software, help connect systems remotely and then display and access data in an easy-to-navigate format. Having a history of data to look back on helps determine how to make those systems run more efficiently in the future.
Next Steps
Created the DIGI ConnectCore 8X SBC Pro Development Kit BenchTalk video demonstrating how to create a touchscreen interface infotainment system with cellular connectivity features. In addition to this video, a project article provides detailed step-by-step instructions on creating the demo yourself. The project article walks you through the process of:
- Using DIGI’s ConnectCore 8X SBC Pro Development Kit and LCD Application Kit to develop a simple control interface.
- Connecting and monitoring your device with DIGI’s Remote Manager.
- Accessing additional Android examples as a starting point to build your own application.
